How to audit a content marketing agency's work: UK guide
Audit an incumbent content marketing agency's work with a UK checklist covering KPIs, GA4 privacy, reporting standards and contract evidence.
What to take away
- Audit against the brief, contract and agreed KPIs, using the checklist below.
- Test GA4 data quality, consent mode settings and UK data protection evidence.
- Score strategy, delivery, measurement, compliance and commercial impact, then agree a plan or exit.
Start with the contract and the brief
An audit needs a baseline. Pull the original brief, statement of work and any change requests. Confirm what the agency promised on volume, format, publishing cadence and reporting. If the paperwork is thin, the dispute becomes a memory test. Our guide to content marketing agency contract terms explains which schedules UK clients should check before an audit begins.
Build a content agency audit checklist
Use a checklist that forces evidence rather than opinion. Keep every item tied to a source you can open.
Content agency audit checklist
- Match invoice lines to delivered assets
- Compare volume with contracted minimum
- Review GA4, Search Console, CRM reports
- Check sessions, conversions, pipeline vs baseline
- Sample assets for accuracy and claims
- Confirm consent mode and data retention
- Interview commissioner and publisher
- Score each area with evidence
- Brief and scopecurrent statement of work and signed change requests.
- OutputCMS export with titles, dates, authors and URLs.
- Editorial qualitysample of ten pieces checked against the brand style guide.
- SEO hygieneindex coverage, canonical tags and internal links from Search Console.
- AnalyticsGA4 property ID, event list, conversion definitions and consent mode settings.
- Data protectionlawful basis record, consent records and retention schedule.
- Claimssubstantiation file for statistics, awards and comparisons.
- Commercial impactCRM report linking content to leads and revenue.
For a cost baseline, compare the fee against our content marketing agency retainer fees benchmarks.
Compare what good looks like
A comparison table stops the audit becoming a taste debate. Ask for the evidence in the middle column, then judge the warning signs on the right.

Review GA4 and UK data privacy
GA4 data quality is a common audit failure. Check consent mode, internal traffic filters, cross-domain tracking and event naming.
The ICO's guide to data protection sets out lawful handling rules that apply to lead forms and audience lists.
The Data Protection Act 2018 provides the UK statutory framework for those duties.
If the agency cannot evidence consent, treat its performance data as unreliable.
Check claims and advertising compliance
Content that promotes a product or service can fall under the CAP Code even when it sits on a blog. The ASA's advertising codes require claims to be substantiated and marketing communications to be identifiable.
Ask for the agency's substantiation file for statistics, awards and comparisons. The file should list each claim, its source and the approval date. A missing file is a commercial risk, not a paperwork annoyance.
Use IPA effectiveness principles
The IPA effectiveness principles are a useful frame for judging campaign logic. They push agencies to link activity to business effects, not just channel metrics.
Look for a balance between long-term brand building and short-term sales activation. Ask how the agency separates base sales from incremental effects.
If the reporting only shows impressions and sessions, the measurement model is incomplete.
Score performance and decide next steps
Run the formal audit once a year and a one-page scorecard each quarter. Score strategy, delivery, measurement, compliance and commercial impact. Weight measurement and commercial impact highest if you sell through a pipeline.
A workable default weighting is strategy 15%, delivery 20%, measurement 25%, compliance 15% and commercial impact 25%. Score each area 1 to 5 and apply the weights.
For a pipeline-led business, raise commercial impact to 30% and cut strategy to 10%. A low total means the agency needs a formal improvement plan. If the total is middling, fix the weak areas and review at the next quarter. A strong total justifies a wider scope.
Common questions
How often should we audit a content marketing agency?
Audit formally once a year and review a one-page scorecard each quarter. Quarterly reviews catch drift before renewal talks. A new agency should face a light early check.
What KPIs matter most in a content agency audit?
Match KPIs to the commercial goal. B2B businesses should track qualified leads, pipeline value and sales-accepted opportunities. Brand-led teams should track branded search, direct traffic and share of voice.
Can we audit an agency without full GA4 access?
You need view access at minimum. Ask for an export of the raw data, the property ID and the conversion definitions. Without that, you can audit output quality but not performance claims.
What if the audit shows poor performance?
Give the agency a written improvement plan with owners and dates. If the next review shows no change, move to a managed exit. Use the audit evidence to decide whether to re-brief or switch supplier.
